Stepping Into Therapy for the First Time: What to Expect
Written by: Samantha Angulo
Walking into a therapy office for the first time can feel like stepping into the unknown.
There’s often a mix of curiosity, hope, and let’s face it: nervousness.
You might know that therapy is the right decision for you, but that doesn’t get rid of the anxiety that sometimes comes with starting something new. Good news is if you found us and made your first appointment. That’s a great first step!
In case you’re looking for a little bit more information about what to expect the first time you come into a session – potentially to calm your nerves about being there – this blog is for you!
First things first: Where are we located?
Despite what it might seem when taking a first look at our building, it does not only house a bank. Take the elevator right to the top floor and you’ll find our office. When you walk in, you’ll be greeted by our client care team at the front desk. You’ll find two kiosks where you’ll check in for your appointment.
This step is very important because it lets our therapists know that you’re waiting for them. If you have any questions at all about your appointment, our client care team is here to help!
Once your therapist is ready to see you, they’ll step into the waiting room and lead you to one of our cozy offices. You can expect to find a large couch waiting for you inside, and all of our therapists agree we want you to feel at home. Please feel free to get comfortable once you head inside.
Now, about that first session:
Truth is it’s really about getting to know each other. Your therapist wants to understand your story, your goals, and what’s bringing you to therapy. It’s normal to feel unsure – we don’t expect you to have all the answers, but we do want to get an idea of what you’re looking for and how we can help you work towards your personal goals.
Throughout that first hour:
Your therapist will likely explain confidentiality, ask about your history, and invite you to share whatever feels most important. Often, the first session is less about “solving” problems and more about creating a safe, supportive space where you can begin to explore your thoughts and feelings.
Although your therapist will be asking you questions, please also take time to ask them questions as well! This may help put you at ease and determine if the therapist is a good fit for you.
By the end of the session:
Most people feel a little lighter. Therapy is a journey, and that first visit is simply the first step that can open the door to understanding, growth, and change.
If you made it this far, please know our doors are always open!
Whether you’re looking for support for yourself, or a loved one, we are here to help and hope to help you find a therapist who is a good fit for you. For more information, reach out to our team and don’t worry – now you know what to expect your first time here!
