Men in therapy

Written by: Nadinna Guerrero

I always want to celebrate when men come to therapy because I know how hard it can be for men to seek therapy.  It can be difficult for men to admit that they need help and that it’s ok to need help. I even tell my male clients how happy I am to see them making this effort and setting an example for other men.

It is well known that women are more expressive than men and that men often do not enjoy expressing themselves.Women have more opportunities to express themselves because they have other women who do the same. Men don’t often discuss their feelings with other men and may not feel comfortable going to anyone else.

What are the benefits for men to seek therapy?

Having a safe space

Therapy is a space where only the client and the client’s experience matters!  Even if men had other men to confide in, they don’t get to just focus on themselves.  Just think, isn’t it wonderful to have a place where you get that time and attention to explore in a safe space, without judgment?

Revolve deep rooted issues

It can be difficult to process and understand emotions that are deeper rooted and therapy is a place where these deeper rooted issues can be explored and resolved. Especially with the style of therapy that I practice, healing can occur through finding emotional needs and great lasting changes can be made!

Receive insight and understanding

There can be a shame associated with emotions and not feeling comfortable to share. Therapy can be a place to help men learn more about themselves and become more aware of their patterns.  I also help men understand how normal their struggles are and that they are like all of us, just human!

Improve relationships

Men can learn how to solve problems in a healthier way, and also learn strategies for conflict resolution to help build their relationships.  Therapy can be a place where they practice and learn these skills.

Improve coping skills

Men can learn healthy coping skills to help reduce depression and anxiety. This will empower them to know that they have the ability to improve their mental health which in turn benefits all areas of their lives!

I have had male clients tell me that they share the benefits of therapy with their male friends, and they are happy to tell them how rewarding therapy has been for them. This is the ultimate goal for therapists, to know they are helping and seeing the results paid forward!

If you have men in your life who have mental health struggles, or you are a man that has reservations about therapy, let’s discuss how therapy can be rewarding for you today!
