Is your teen dealing with bullying? Tips for parents to help them through it

Adolescence represents many emotions, feelings, and changes; but sometimes also anxiety or concern for those teens who suffer bullying from their peers.

But what is bullying? It is violent, teasing and / or harassing behavior that occurs between peers.

Bullying can be physical, verbal, or cybernetic. That is why as parents, we have to be vigilant and stimulate conversation and trust, to support them whenever necessary. Now, how can we help them?

Know how to listen

It is essential that we create times designated to listening to them. Give them the space to feel safe to share their concerns, worries and fears with us. Listen to them, understand them, support them and accompany them. It is glorious to be able to build trust from both sides and feel safe.

Believe in them

We must not underestimate their words. Sometimes we don’t give importance to “teen problems” and ignore what they tell us. We can interpret that what they tell us is not important or relevant and we may be missing a cry for help.

Instill self-love

Let’s make them feel safe, confident in themselves. Let’s show them all the wonderful things they have inside and out. Make them feel that they can handle anything and that no one can make them feel bad.

As we think about how to help our teen who is being bullied, I believe that the main task as parents is to discourage and punish this practice. Let’s promote good peer relationships. That no one should be abused or mistreated either because of their weight, height, build, way of speaking or whatever.

There is already plenty of violence in social media and on the streets, our homes should be a pleasant place where we can set an example, with values and always respect for each other.
